About Jose Sarria
Jose Sarria, a Second World War veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, marched into Berlin, and participated in the liberation of Hadamar, became a prominent figure in San Francisco’s LGBTQ community after the war. He performed drag opera parodies at the Black Cat Café, inspiring his audience to challenge unjust laws against their civil rights. Notably, Sarria was the first openly gay man to run for public office in the United States.
