TRIO hopes that first-generation college students feel welcome at Oakton and that they are an integral part of the institution’s success. First-Gen Week is a time for first-gen students, faculty, staff and supporters to cultivate community and foster relationships between those who may share the experience of being first-generation college students. The purpose is to create a welcoming atmosphere for traditionally underrepresented students.

Dates:

Monday, November 6, 2023-- First-Gen College Student Yoga & Juice Bar —TRIO hosts a light yoga session, led by TRIO advisor and certified yoga instructor Mary Kate Moskal followed by a yummy juice bar. All first-generation college students and friends are invited to attend. Participants are encouraged to bring their yoga mats and wear comfy clothes.

Tuesday, November 7, 2023 -- First-Gen College Student Panel — TRIO hosts a panel discussion composed of students, staff, and faculty who identify as first-generation college students. All are invited to attend and listen as panelists share their experiences as the first in their families to attend college. Refreshments will be provided.

Wednesday, November 8, 2023 – First-Generation College Student Lunch – Celebrate National First-Generation College Student Day with TRIO! Join TRIO, first-generation students, friends, faculty, and staff in celebration of students who are the first in their families to attend college. Come and share space with great folks that may have some shared experiences and enjoy a free lunch.

Wednesday, November 8, 2023 – First-Gen IG Takeover!  — Join a first-generation TRIO student during their day as they share their experiences as a first-generation college student at Oakton. Follow us on Instagram @oaktontriosss.

Thursday, November 9, 2023 –First-Gen College Student: Ace Your Next Interview — TRIO will host this event to offer first-generation college students tips and resources for interviewing skills and leveraging their skills for their next career interview opportunity. Professional attire is encouraged but not required.
