About this Event
1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, IL 60016
This exhibition presents approximately seventy paintings created in Northern Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with a particular emphasis on Dutch masters of the Golden Age. Among the many highlights are works associated with Rembrandt’s circle, including a piece by his teacher Pieter Lastman and notable examples by his pupils Gerard Dou, Ferdinand Bol, and Govert Flinck. Also on view are three paintings by Jan Steen, the quintessential Dutch genre painter known for his vivid depictions of everyday life. The entire collection was assembled over four decades by Harlan J. Berk, a Chicago-based coin dealer specializing in ancient numismatics. Berk is the author of six books and numerous articles on the subject, and his discerning eye has brought together a remarkable array of Northern European paintings that reflect both scholarly depth and personal passion.
The Public Reception takes place on Thursday, May 7, 5 - 8 p.m.
Viewings take place from May 7 to June 26, 2026, during regular museum hours.
