About this Event
1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, IL 60016
Oakton is proud to host colleagues from across the Northern Illinois Faculty Development Consortium for this half-day institute on infusing students and self-directed learning into your course.
Fostering student skills and self-directed learning skills can help your students grow as learners. Come learn ways to foster their sense of belonging, improve their study skills, and enhance their metacognitive skills so that they are better positioned to learn in your course, and beyond!
Participants will spend the morning learning together and applying their learning to their own work with students. Concurrent sessions are offered by Mary Johannesen-Schmidt, Ph.D., a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Coordinator of Oakton's Center for Teaching Innovation, Holly Rey, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at McHenry County College, and Stephanie Whalen, Ed.D., Director of the Academy for Teaching and Professor of English and Interdisciplinary Studies at William Rainey Harper College.
This in-person event at Oakton's Des Plaines campus starts with a light breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at Oakton's Student Center, Room 1530. Afterward, participants will go to the specified breakout rooms: the Board Room, 1506, Room 2545, and Room 2836.
The event concludes at 12:30 p.m. at the Student Center. Participants will leave with ideas from the latest research and practical applications to incorporate into their specific discipline.
Colleagues from all member institutions (College of Lake County, College of DuPage, Kishwaukee, Oakton, Harper, Triton, McHenry, and Elgin Community Colleges) are invited to attend. Space is limited, so all interested should indicate their interest via this form. A planning committee member will be in contact to confirm that space is available.
