1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, IL 60016

On June 19, 2024, Michael Broadway, an author, stage 4 prostate cancer survivor, and college graduate, died while in custody at Stateville Correctional Center. Michael was a student in the prison education program that Oakton offers in partnership with Northwestern University, and he earned degrees from Oakton in 2022 and Northwestern in 2023. In 2023, he also published his first work of fiction, One Foot In, a work of urban fiction tracking two best friends who are coming of age on the streets of Chicago. Join Oakton alums Jimmy Soto, Benard McKinley, Rick Hollins, and James Lenoir as they read from One Foot In and share memories of their classmate and friend. The event will provide an opportunity to center the voices and experiences of people who are too often silenced systemically.

If you cannot attend in person, you can register to participate in the event virtually.

Light refreshments are provided.

This event is generously sponsored by Oakton's ACEPSS Department, Student Government Association (SGA), Peace & Social Justice (PSJ), Anti-Racism Team, and Great Books. It was organized by the Prison Education Program Oakton (PEP-ON) faculty.
