During Black History Month, students and staff of Oakton College are invited to dive into the insightful and eclectic history of Soul Food by author Adrian Miller. This event is hosted by the B.L.A.C.K. Student Success Program (BSSP) and Oakton's Library
Adrian Miller’s book delves into the influences, ingredients and innovations that make up the soul food tradition. Each chapter focuses on the culinary and social history of one of the ingredients such as fried chicken, chitlins, yams, greens and "red drinks." In doing so, Miller uncovers how each ingredient got on the soul food plate and what they each mean for African American culture and identity.
In this book, Miller also argues that the story is more complex and surprising than commonly thought. This refreshing look at one of America's most celebrated, mythologized and maligned cuisines is enriched by spirited sidebars, photographs and twenty-two recipes.
Book Giveaway: The Library secured 10 copies of Miller's book! Be among the first 10 to express your intention to attend via this Google Form, and claim your complimentary copy.
